Directions: One of the themes for this semester is “The Myth of Education and Empowerment.”
We have read and analyzed two readings from Rereading America: “A Prostitute, A Servant, and
A Customer-Service Representative: A Latina In Academia” by Carmen R. Lugo-Lugo
“Learning to Read” by Malcolm X Answer one of the following questions: Can a genuine desire
to learn be encouraged through coercion? (Examples of enforced attendance, deadlines, etc.)
Would it be possible for public schools to empower students in the way that Malcolm X self-
did education empower him? If so, how? If not, why not? Lugo-Lugo believes that Ethnic Studies
is important for all students? Do you agree or disagree? Assignment specifications: Be sure that
